If your pupils have a fascination with anything to do with bowel movements, this year’s school trips could become strangely absorbing.

To mark the centenary of the death of Thomas Crapper, the National Trust is celebrating the toilets at its properties up and down the country.

From the communal latrines at Housesteads Fort on Hadrian’s Wall to the ceramic chamber pots at Berrington Hall in Herefordshire, the loos are taking their place in depictions of life in times gone by.

Although Mr Crapper did not invent the flushing toilet, his inventions, such as the floating ballcock, made it more popular.
