Being named "twit of the town" is up there with being crowned village idiot. But that was before the global phenomenon that is Twitter.
Darlington was in need of a "Twitterer-in-residence" and Mike McTimoney, an IT teacher, was chosen for the esteemed post. As the town's official tweeter, he will post under the name of TheDarloBard.
His remit? To keep folk up to date with what is going on locally by posting videos, photographs and messages.
The 32-year-old hopes to join the so-called Twitterati and gain an army of followers.
"I deal with young people on a daily basis and think this is a great way to get information to them," he says.
But Mr McTimoney is not quite ready to give up the day job. His new appointment earns him just #163;140 a year, a pound for every character allowed in a Twitter update.
