About 20,000 pupils are to take the Government’s new work-related diploma from September, ministers have announced. This is just over half the number originally predicted when local authorities, schools and colleges submitted bids to offer them last year. The Liberal Democrats said the figures showed pupils were shunning the diploma, which it said should be scrapped. The Government said local organisers of the qualification were keeping numbers low to ensure the new courses were of high quality.
