Orkney is to have its fourth director of education in 10 years as Jim Anderson, director since 1991, announces his retirement. Mr Anderson, who is 63, stepped down in April from his national responsibility as chairman of the Higher Still information task group.

Mike Drever, the depute, will take the helm until a successor to Mr Anderson is found - the second time he has performed the caretaker role.
