Disappearing qualifications

I RECENTLY contacted the Recruitment and Employment Confederation agency in the hope of finding a teaching job.

After giving brief details of my qualifications and experience they gave me the astonishing news that I am not a qualified teacher and all I could hope for is classroom support work. As I have a post-graduate certificate in education from Manchester University (180-81) this was a bit breathtaking, even more so when I was told that in my subject area (teaching English as a foreign language) there was no such a thing as a PGCE.

Are the agencies discarding qualifications of which they have never heard? If so it’s not surprising there is a shortage of teachers.
