Far from encouraging the bottom 10 per cent to even greater effort, Chris Woodhead’s assertion that the gap between their attainments and those of the top 10 per cent of schools is widening will leave all the teachers in those schools feeling dispirited. Since it is completely untrue, I would imagine they will also be feeling angry that the media are happy to print his propaganda without analysing the facts.

Perhaps the headline should be “Woodhead Gets His facts Wrong”.
