I agree with Christine Gilbert that we need to keep a sharp focus on standards achieved by all groups of pupils, including the vulnerable and most able, and that this requires differentiated teaching to match pupils’ interests and abilities.
As a retired schools inspector, I welcome the long-demanded and awaited “drop in” inspections. After all, long ago, British Standards carried out inspections without any warning, which helped improve standards in industry.
Also, there is no merit in the argument that inspectors might visit when half the school is away for the day. Well-established policies, procedures and management practices do not walk out with pupils on school trips.
