Nearly two-thirds of trainee primary teachers in Scotland lack the basic maths skills required to teach the subject.

Researchers at Dundee University found that confidence levels were low, with online maths tests showing that 65 per cent were not up to standard.

They argue that all trainees should pass a maths test as a prerequisite for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, which would be in line with practice in England.
