One in three adults agrees with the view that the English love their dogs more than their children, according to a survey by the National Children’s Bureau.
The study of 2,000 children and young people and more than 500 adults found that as children grow up they feel less welcome in public places, and are less likely to believe that most adults are friendly.
But they also admitted that adults are more respectful to children than vice versa. Fewer than a quarter of primary pupils and just one in eight secondary pupils thought most children their age were polite enough to adults.
