The frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination made the controversial statement in his victory speech, which saw him put clear water between himself and his fellow GOP challengers.

In his speech, the billionaire real estate tycoon paid his thanks to his unlikely swathes of supporters and his family.

“We won the evangelicals,” Mr Trump said. “We won with young. We won with old. We won with highly educated. We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated.”

The inflammatory words are just the latest in a long line of remarkably outspoken comments that have become a calling card of Mr Trump’s throughout his battle to win the Republican nomination.

It is also one of the rare occasions that the reality TV star has mentioned education in the race for nomination to run for president.

Last month, Mr Trump said he was a “tremendous believer in education, but education has to be at a local level”.
