Fewer and fewer people accept Peter Pike’s contention that humans have greater moral worth than non-human animals (“Animal rights propaganda risk”, TES, June 2).
Pupils should be given the facts and then be trusted to make up their own minds.
How has he come to his conclusion? Do humans behave well to each other, to other creatures or to the planet? If humans are inherently superior to other creatures, perhaps it is time they demonstrated that fact.
Mr Pike warns teachers about teaching material from bodies such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The desire to stifle discussion indicates he fears the truth. Humans have a poor history; if they are superior beings they must show more compassion and self-control - or they will destroy the planet.
