An observant teacher noticed a hand grenade. Live. In the hands of a small boy keen to show it to classmates at Stanford infants in Brighton. It was prised from its owner’s fingers, then put gingerly in a bucket of sand in the playground to await the bomb squad. Meanwhile, all 280 infants were evacuated. Writers of critical-incident policies please note: it’s not conkers you want to be banning; it’s hand grenades.
