Don’t forget the librarians

I was delighted to see a three-page article (News Focus) in TESS (17 May) on the results of the recent Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy and the importance that reading for pleasure can play in improving literacy standards.

However, I was disappointed to see that the role school librarians can play in developing a culture of reading in schools was omitted.

School Librarians are experts on reading for pleasure and the important role they can play must be highlighted at every opportunity.

School librarians are capable of putting the right book into the right child’s hand at the right time. By working with departments across their schools and with outside agencies such as the Scottish Book Trust, school librarians can help to transform those children who are disengaged from books and reading.
