The Association for College Management has consistently supported proposals for a new sector skills council for further and higher education, and adult, community and work-based learning.

We believe it to be vital that the coherence of this body is not undermined by the inclusion of elements such as youth work and Connexions.

Furthermore, restricting the body to the areas originally proposed will promote a close relationship with the leadership college.

The association therefore urges the Department for Education and Skills to endorse a sector skills council for further education, higher education, adult and community and work-based learning as the optimal model for post 16-education.

Peter Pendle Chief executive and general secretary, Association for College Management
