A teacher who was banned from driving for six years for a range of motoring offences can continue teaching, England’s General Teaching Council has said.

Gurbax Singh Takhar, who taught at Four Dwellings high, in Birmingham, had been convicted for drink-driving before and after training as a teacher, and driving without a licence or insurance.

Paul Rodbourn, representing Mr Takhar, said: “The majority of offences were nine years ago, since then he has done everything to put matters right.

His headteacher considered him a very valued member of staff and a committed teacher.”

Mr Takhar said: “It was an extremely distressful time in my life as I found out my wife was having an affair. I wasn’t thinking straight.

Since then I have rebuilt my life, re-married and now have a son, which is the greatest thing ever to happen to me.”

Mr Takhar, who says he no longer drinks after promising his wife he would quit, began teacher training in 2000. Under the order, he must not commit any further crimes and must inform future employers about the order.
