The headteacher at the centre of the cash-for-peerages row was banned for three years for drink-driving this week. Des Smith, 60, wept in court as magistrates also fined him pound;1,800 and imposed a 12-month community and supervision order, requiring him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

Mr Smith, former head of All Saints’ Catholic school, in Dagenham, Essex, pleaded guilty. He had drunk five pints of lager at his retirement party.

He was caught following an accident near his home in Wanstead, north-east London. Mr Smith allegedly told an undercover reporter earlier this year that generous sponsors of the academies scheme could expect to be nominated for honours.
