Arkleston primary in Renfrew, the launch pad for the Scottish Office campaign, is a believer in positive discipline. “Children sometimes need help in building up good relationships,” Margaret Byrne, the head, says.
Among Arkleston’s strategies is “drum therapy” in which the pupils learn how to drum together in time. Mrs Byrne says: “It takes all of their concentration and the stress just flows from them.”
But she cautioned against simplistic solutions. “The issue is not about exclusion but about making pupils feel part of the school.”
