LET’S TURN to the great and the good for help in future-gazing. Colleagues attempted a round-up of new year wishes, but sadly few bothered to reply (black marks in particular to the DFEE). The rest were just too dull.

We can share a couple of gems. Nick Tate at the QCA hopes for “successful but cautious implementation of post-16 qualification reforms and major new developments in vocational qualifictions”. Thrilling, eh?

He also predicts “new faces in quangoland”, a safe bet given he for one is leaving for Winchester College - whose incumbent, James Sabben-Clare prays for a level playing field between independent and state schools with “equal funding for all pupils, regardless of background”.

Quite. The sooner Government spending per pupil matches Winchester’s fees, the better.
