As English teachers throughout the country are stunned by the results of KS3 national tests, I was annoyed to read the trivial comments made by Perry Mills (TES, June 9).

How have the standards of markers fallen when their attention is distracted by searching to pillory innocent mistakes rather than to consider the quality of effort made to express quite complex ideas. Are slips of the pen not permissible to 14-year-old children?
