Edinburgh University plans to boost numbers of students from poor backgrounds

* Edinburgh University plans to boost numbers of students from poor backgrounds by accepting applicants with lower A-level grades. Admissions will take into account social background, school attended and “personal qualities”, as well as exam results. The university said changes would “make the system fairer to applicants from all backgrounds”. But private schools questioned the decision.
