Our Inside Story shows that the history of sugar is the history of colonialism. Feel the weight of a kilo bag... now imagine eating your way through 40 of them. A sickening thought, but that’s how much every man, woman and child in the UK consumes each year. In 1800, the statistic was a mere seven kilos. Healthwise, our present excess costs us dear (page 8).

Will we cut down? Fat chance: our desire for sweet things runs deep. Cue a little sex education perhaps. See our top tips for getting it right on page 14.
