New term, new strategy. Science comes under the spotlight as the key stage 3 initiative is launched nationally this month. On page 24, Mike Collins shares his school’s experience of the two-year pilot project - “Why haven’t we done this before?” But while the emphasis of the strategy is on the “how to” rather than the “what to” teach, content is cited as a matter of concern by a House of Commons committee on science education. It wants the subject to be more topical in order to appeal to students’ curiosity about cloning and similar headline-grabbing issues (page 22).

Enough to turn you to drink? Recent press reports have focused on the problem of binge drinking among young people. It’s a subject worth exploiting - and not just in science. Our Inside Story this week takes a sober look at the nation’s drug of choice.
