Hollywood, with its lure of fame, glamour and romance, has always been a magnet. But under the studio system, the Dream Factory was a real world of harsh realities - rich pickings for media studies students(page 12). ‘Men gather round me like moths around the flame...’ sang Marlene Dietrich in the film The Blue Angel. Moths can’t help being attracted to light. It was believed that in trying to navigate they often mistook the lightbulb for the Moon. Paradoxically, the structure of a moth’s eye makes it see darkness in the centre of the light... the moth is heading for a safe hiding place (page 30).
