The Times Educational Supplement Scotland invites young people living in Scotland to write about their vision of what learning will be like in 2020, indicating what strategies and actions they believe will be needed to achieve it.
As part of this year’s Edinburgh Conference, run jointly by Edinburgh City Council and The TESS, we are looking to the future of learning and society through the eyes of young people.
Based on the theme “A 2020 Vision for Scotland”, this year’s conference on November 5 has a radically different format and will feature young people as some of the keynote speakers.
How does Scotland need to change? We face great challenges brought about by a constantly changing social and cultural identity. We also face rapid economic and technological change which will radically alter the way people learn.
Young people presenting their vision for Scotland in 2020, and their strategies for achieving it, may consider focusing on one or more of the following points, addressing how we can create a nation in which:
* all citizens are motivated, participative and achieve as much as they can in, and for, our society;
* we have improved human relationships, a more humane society and structures which promote learning for life;
* society is inclusive and social justice a fundamental right, where all people are equal and barriers of ethnic origin and class are eliminated;
* there are positive attitudes, bringing about healthy lifestyles; Entries of between 500 and 1,000 words, from 16 to 18-year-olds only, should be emailed as a Word document by October 8 to The TES Scotland at scoted@tes.co.uk (the name and age of the writer and school or contact address should be included).
Winning entries will be published in The TESS and the winners invited to the first session of the conference and introduced to the Minister for Children and Young People.
