David Henderson reports from the Catholic heads’ conference in Crieff.
A ROBUST defence of the newly formed education faculty at Glasgow University has been mounted by Professor Bart McGettrick, the dean of education. The faculty includes the former St Andrew’s College, the country’s only training base for Catholic teachers.
Critics such as Professor Eric Wilkinson, a long-serving lecturer in the university’s education department, have condemned the terms of the merger and claim a strong Catholic focus is a threat.
Professor McGettrick said: “The faculty will not dilute its commitment to Catholicism in the face of pursuing intangible or misguided notions of academic freedom. The essence of academic freedom in higher education is to be found in the pursuit of all ideas; all ideas so long as they are tested against the light of truth.”
