The end of the rainbow

Jo Brighouse’s piece, which mentioned that the more rainbows one sees in a primary school, the more difficult things are (“Struggling to find the pot of gold”, 12 April), led me to wonder: why rainbows? They are usually seen as God’s symbol of hope, but we should also remember that a rainbow is ephemeral, largely an illusion and notable because of its rarity.
