What is it?

These non-fiction “explanation texts” have been produced by TESiboard. They are similar to information texts but explain a process, often in a step-by-step way. This collection concentrates on the natural world and can support cross-curricular work in science, geography and history.

How to use it

The texts are presented in two versions: listen and read books, which have simpler text and full sound support for younger or emerging readers, and a read-alone version, which has a more detailed text. The books can be used as a model for non-fiction writing, or as a source of information for a science, geography or history topic.

Each text is accompanied by a cyclical sequencer, where pupils have to put the images and information in order and play back or print their sequence. They are broken down into simple and more complex versions, with the latter including more stages and space for pupils to write their own text.

Taking it further

Alongside each book is an editable Word document containing images from the books. These can be used to support non-fiction writing, sequencing tasks and for displays.

One text looks at the lifecycle of a butterfly, from an egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Pupils click on the arrow to turn the pages and click on the speaker icon to hear the text being read out. Other texts feature a year in the life of a hedgehog, covering mating and hibernating, the lifecycle of a frog from egg to tadpole to frog, the lifecycle of a sunflower, a woodland habitat and the changing seasons.
