An Enniskillen school which lost two pupils in a fatal road accident has introduced reflective school uniforms from September in a bid to prevent further accidents.

A coroner report released last week found that the dark school uniform was a contributing factor in the deaths of Devenish College pupils Nathan Gault, 15, and Debbie Whyte, 14, who were run over by a car in November 2008.

Alex Baird, chair of governors at the school, said that consulting the current pupils about the uniform design was an important part of the process. “It would be very easy for us as governors and other people distant from the pupils to decide on the design, but, it may be a strange word to use, it has to be ‘cool’,” he said.

The new uniform was recommended by the Focus Group, which was launched by the Western Education and Library Board following the accident to address pupils’ road safety. MR.
