The beneficiary of the pupils’ business acumen is The Prince’s Trust Scotland, which runs the Scholars’ Challenge competition.

The trust challenged six teams of 16 and 17-year-olds across Scotland to turn Pounds 3,000 into Pounds 20,000 per school, with the support of a mentor. In the case of Bishopbriggs Academy’s 14-strong team, their business guru was Ken Ross, chief executive of the Elphinstone land and property group.

The team organised events, ranging from a gala dinner at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow, a Burns Supper and a celebrity golf day at Turnberry. Guests included businessmen Sir Tom Hunter and Sir Arnold Clark, and Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire.

Mr Ross said: “During the process, I was struck by the creative ideas that came forward from the pupils; the passion and drive demonstrated by the team; the entrepreneurial flair; and how, as a team, they used the competitive element of the challenge to drive them on.”

The team has received a Diana Certificate of Excellence in recognition of its efforts for The Prince’s Trust. But the pupils will have to wait until June 16 to discover whether they have beaten the other five schools competing in the challenge - Dollar Academy, Madras College in St Andrews, Lomond School in Helensburgh, Larkhall Academy in North Lanarkshire, and Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh.
