The equipment awards

These aim to encourage progressive approaches to educational equipment, such as teaching aids, furniture and play equipment. These should demonstrate innovation and design applicability, as well as safety and value for money.

The judging criteria were:

* Design

* Methodology in research

* Conformity to manufacturing standards

* Conformity to safety regulations

* Ease of use and maintenance

* Weight, assembly, arrangement of controls and manoeuvrability

* Support materials and user guidance

* Adaptability to end user

* Quality of materials

* Value for money

* Durability and lifespan

The judges were: Eileen Barlex, senior manager of education and training at the Design Council, Bill Gulliver scientific officer at the Furniture Industry Research Association, Nick Carter, design director of the Educational Design Group, Jon O’Connor, head of Parkside First School, Dr Jerry Wellington, reader in education at Sheffield University
