On the way back to Liverpool Street station, a cabby asked me what I did and what the big issues are in further education.

English for speakers of other languages is a hot one at the moment, I ventured, less than enthusiastic about the prospect of the conversation I sensed was about to follow.

Seeing an open goal, my new-found friend proceeded to give me a 20-minute speech about how immigrants should be electronically tagged and teenagers too for that matter. The idea of free Esol provision for all was certainly not part of his vision of utopia.

After getting out of the taxi, I discovered that my receipt had been filled in so illegibly that it was rendered useless for the purpose of claiming expenses.

Yes, immigrants who have good English speaking and writing skills. I can see why he feels so threatened. Let’s hope his fears are justified.
