“In the last four weeks how many times, if any, have you got drunk?” What kind of professional behaviour is it for Ofsted to ask this of 10-year-old children? (TES, June 1). It is an immoral question because implicitly it suggests that getting drunk may be acceptable. It is unethical because parents’ consent to ask the question has not been obtained and the use of postcode destroys its claimed anonymity. And it is an unsound question because some pupils who have been drunk might deny it while others who haven’t might seek street cred by boasting they have. MPs need to ask questions about what Ofsted is up to.
