THE PERSONAL view by Rae Angus (FE Focus, September 18) is misleading in suggesting European Social Fund money is some form of cost subsidy for colleges.
Competition for funds is intense. Grants have to be earned on the merits of what is offered to beneficiaries (student need) and additionality (delivering more than would otherwise be offered).
ESF receipts have been substantial but so have the achievements of colleges in providing better services to the unemployed and other disadvantaged groups.
