Europe's poorest

BRITAIN'S children are more likely to be born into poverty than those in any of the 14 other states in the European Union, according to a study by the Institute of Public Policy Research.

The institute says more than a third of children live in poor households and nearly a fifh live in jobless families.

Another study by the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion reckons that the Government's policies to tackle child poverty will reduce the number of children living in poor families by one million, but that will still leave two million.
