SCREAM INTO THE NEW YEAR

See vampires, ghosts, ghouls and glamour women at The Museum of the Moving Image, London SE1, which pays tribute until May 19 to 40 years of Hammer Horror. It includes a Young Vampires Trail for children. Button up rubber stocking protectors and other Flapper fashions are displayed in Fun and Fancy until May, and photographs and text in Photographing Fairies, which explores the role of the photographer in film.Events include a film tribute to gangsters and hoodlums featuring James Cagney, Edward G Robinson and George Raft. THE SHIPPING FORECAST

Buckinghamshire Art Gallery, Aylesbury, is the only inland venue for photographer Mark Power’s black and white interpretations of the regular BBC broadcast that has become a British institution. To the accompaniment of sea, wind, rain, radio and bird sounds, the exhibition conveys the effect that the sea and its weather have on people. Accompanying events include poetry workshops for schools and a performance by the Commotion Dance Company. Free admission. Details: 01296 331441.

JEFF MARK EDUCATIONAL TRUST EXHIBITION

Fund-raising event organised by TheArt ThreAt, a non-profit making organisation run for artists by artists, at New End Gallery, 25 Carnegie House, Hampstead, London NW3, with works donated by artists including Paula Rego, Tai-Shan Schierenberg and the Britannia Works Studios. INVENTING AMERICA: A YEAR OF AMERICAN CULTURE

Visit the unofficial 51st state of America, aka the Barbican Centre, London EC2, for a festival of music (from classical to rock via jazz and folk idioms), theatre, opera, dance, cinema, the visual arts, literature, technology and food. Every available space including the tropical conservatory, foyers and restaurants will be devoted to giving visitors an all-American adventure. Onscreen America kicks off with a biker film weekend about young American rebels, January 24-25, to complement the art gallery’s, The Art of the Harley exhibition.
