The Royal Geographical Society is holding its annual careers day and exhibition for GCSE and A-level students on June 27 at 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7, 11am-2.40pm. History in Action 2000, “the largest multi-period historical festival in the world”, is being staged by English Heritage at Kirby Hall, Nrthamptonshire, August 12-13, 9.30am-6pm. Ongoing displays will include: Normans and Saxons of 1066, medieval jousting and combat displays, English Civil War battle tactics, Napoleonic battle, the American Civil War, the Imperial Roman Army from the first to fifth centuries, and World War I and II displays including tanks and Spitfire fighters. Activities include a giant historical dance, soldiers’ drill, comedy, drama, music, song, mummers’ plays and talks. Admission: pound;7-pound;12 day ticket, EH members free. Tel: 01536 203230.

English Heritage is also mounting the largest ever re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings 1066 on October 14-15 on the very battlefield at Battle Abbey, East Sussex. Dharma Day, on July 15, will introduce visitors to traditional Buddhist meditation techniques, mantra chanting, music and dance, tel: 020 8858 4422.
