Focus on Warhol

Edinburgh will stage a major Andy Warhol exhibition later this summer but, in the meanwhile, the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow is hosting a smaller show about the artist until September 2.

Andy Warhol Posters concentrates on ephemera, the publicity posters made to promote his exhibitions, film and other events. Images in the show range from Mickey Mouse to a gruesome photograph of cut flesh criss-crossed with black stitches used in a Frankenstein film poster during his lifetime. Quotations from his book, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, give an insight into the life and work of an artist who once described himself as “a deeply superficial person”.

History of comics

Old comic books found in an attic form the centrepiece of a show at the Highland Museum of Childhood in Strathpeffer. 100 Years of British Comics and Story Papers traces the history of comics in the UK from 1880 to 1980, starting with The Little Folks, a worthy publication aimed at highly educated children, says museum curator and manager Jennifer Maxwell. The exhibition runs until the end of October.
