UNTIL NOVEMBER 30 THE GEOMETRY OF WAR,1500-1750

Improvements in the manufacture of heavy guns, new fortifications and surveying, afforded Renaissance mathematicians new opportunities to apply their skills. This exhibition at the History of Science Museum, Broad Street, Oxford, reveals how they sought to relate range to angle of fire, applied novel surveying techniques to range-finding, and devised instruments to introduce these new methods to the battlefield. JULY 5-7 THE SHERLOCK HOLMES FESTIVAL

An exhibition, arts festival, classical concert, street party, film and theatrical events, a mystery trail and a Victorian street market are among the events taking place in Crowborough, East Sussex, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived for 23 years. In addition, the town’s Beacon Community College is arranging what it hopes will be the biggest writers’ workshop in the world on the Internet. Details: 01892 665464.

JULY 5-11 BRADFORD ANIMATION FESTIVAL

The programme at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford, includes a masterclass about King Kong, Achilles and the Wallace and Gromit films; Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall, producers of children’s animation, discussing The Wind in the Willows, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, and other highlights of their 20-year partnership; and a Toon Day for children with screenings, competitions and free entry into the Animotion Cafe. JULY 8-13 DISABILITY PRIDE WEEK

Tower Hamlets, local disabled people and voluntary organisations have organised a packed programme, which includes: a housing conference, an information technology day, a sensory impairment day, a Bengali cultural day, and a festival of music and art with a fashion show and children’s area.
