JULY 18-AUGUST 31 BECOME A WAR REPORTER

As part of the “ITN War Reporter” display at the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1, children can read a news item at a recreation of the famous News at Ten desk and watch their performance on a television screen. Or they can undertake a mission as a war reporter using activity sheets and enter a competition to write a news story about an event covered in the exhibition. The prize is the chance to meet newscasters and reporters on a behind-the-scenes tour of ITN. JULY 19-27 NATIONAL GALLERY WEEK

Engage, the national association for gallery education, is co-ordinating events in art galleries nationwide. Another Engage initiative is “Opt for Art”, which provides 43 travel grants to Welsh secondary schools to help fund visits to galleries, and supports collaborative projects between schools and artists to help Year 9 pupils make an informed choice about opting for GCSE art. JULY 19-27 SUMMER EXHIBITION: GALLERY WEEK

All children under eight visiting the Royal Academy, Piccadilly, London W1, will be given a free colouring pad and crayons, and each day from 11.30am a guide will lead eight to 12-year-olds on a lively 45-minute journey through the galleries. NOVEMBER 8-9 WANDSWORTH CHILDREN’S MUSIC FESTIVAL

Children aged up to 16, including those with special needs, are invited to participate in this festival at Southfields Community College, 333 Merton Road, London SW18. It will comprise standard instrumental categories for soloists, duets and ensembles; composition; solo percussion; plus choir and family music categories.
