JUNE 21-25 REUNION Oval Primary School, Croydon, is celebrating its 125th anniversary with an exhibition of memorabilia such as exercise books, school reports, photographs and corporal punishment records and a reunion party on June 25 for former teachers and pupils. JUNE 22-29 SCIENCE FESTIVAL Families are invited to a fun day at Derby University’s SciTec festival, June 27. The rest of the week, schools from the region are taking part in such events as “Theatrical pyrotechnics” (Malcolm Armstrong, special effects maestro from James Bond films and Star Wars demonstrating “explosives in parlour, pantry and pantomime”), “Back to the Future” and “Meet a Dalek”. JUNE 25; JULY 4 YORK MYSTERY PLAYS Following a series of educational workshops, primary schools in York are performing A Creative Mystery, a musical re-enactment of the Creation, at York Minster, June 25, 7pm, pound;5 adults, children free. In a second project, pupils from the special schools of York are preparing a processional performance of Moses and Pharaoh as part of “The Carnival of Time” (a York Millennium Mystery Plays and York Early Music Festival project). JUNE 25-27 KIDSFEST Manchester United footballers, Coronation Street stars, Barney the loveable dinosaur and the Rugrats are dropping in to Manchester’s GMex Centre for this educational fun day for families. Details: 0800 783 8445; website: www.kidsfest.co.uk JUNE 26 NORTHERN LIGHTS The night will be lit by the stunning Sarruga and their towering dragons from northern Spain, insects, a golden galleon and tiny flickering fish during the finale of Islington’s International Festival in Upper Street, London N1. These will be surrounded by “a shimmering shoal of moving lanterns massed into a host of colourful fish”, created by 250 children from local schools. JUNE 28-JULY 2 THEATREFAIR ‘99: INSIDE OUT Join the Royal Shakespeare Company under canvas in Stratford-upon-Avon and try your hand at stage fighting, dancing, acting, making music and making up faces and bodies using paint and putty. Events include acting workshops for children, readings from TS Eliot and Ted Hughes, an actors’ forum on Antony and Cleopatra, information from RSC professionals on theatre careers, and tours of scenic workshops where sets are designed and constructed.
