* The Department for Education and Employment is expanding its programme of 1,200 literacy and numeracy summer schools with the launch of a pound;1 million pilot scheme of 25 summer schools in July and August. They include the Kirklees local education authority summer school, which involves 600 eight to 16-year-olds in a range of subjects, including numeracy; and Brookfield High School, Knowsley, which will provide for 215 pupils aged 10 to 16 and targets physically disabled students. With the aim of improving literacy and numeracy, many summer schools offer pupils access to the integrated learning system SuccessMaker, interspersed with sports and fun activities. * The seminar programme at the North West Regional Educational Conference and Exhibition at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, October 21-22, includes an update on the National Numeracy Strategy with Phil Robbins, SEN, the strategy with Olwen El-Naggar, and web links with the Bolton curriculum ICT centre.
