A three-year exam analysis at Hillhead High in Glasgow shows that Chinese and Arab pupils do better than other ethnic groups. Pakistani pupils, in particular, are doing less well than five years ago. Surinder Bhopal, a teacher who carried out the study, believes the fall-off may be because some families have moved out of the area to the suburbs. His small survey matches the findings of a large-scale study south of the border. Bilingual pupils achieve considerably lower passes in Higher English than monolinguals. Only 9 per cent of bilingual pupils gained an A or B pass compared with 29 per cent of monolinguals.
