Exams fail the screen test

England’s second-largest exam board has had to scale down a trial of electronic marking of GCSE papers this week.

Around 100,000 papers, in maths and several other subjects, were due to have been sent to examiners electronically and marked on-screen. They will now be graded using traditional pen-and-paper methods.

Edexcel, which expects to mark a million papers electronically this year, said the decision had been made because of concerns that examiners who were involved in the technical aspects of the on-screen trial had too much work to complete.
