Teachers and parents can rent “state of the art” laptop computers for pound;5 a week from Education Rewards. This includes free insurance, warranty and Internet access. A wireless network solution also enables users to access the school’s network or the Internet from anywhere within the school. The company hopes to announce details of a new loyalty scheme that will subsidise the rental further and release funds for the school to concentrate on infrastructure.

Assessment software

With a strong focus on target-setting in Scottish schools, everyone is looking into methods of pupil profiling and tracking. Now Phoenix First, which has management information systems in 19 out of the 32 Scottish education authorities, is demonstrating its new program, Assessment Manager for monitoring the progress of pupils from Primary 1 to Secondary 6.

The program, which was developed with the help of Dundee education department, has, says the company, “been designed to cope with any type of assessment that any school requires to record and report on pupils’ progress. This includes baseline assessments, individual education plans, PIPS, NFER-Nelson tests, 5-14 national tests and teacher assessments, prelims, Standard grade, Higher Still and internal assessents. Junior MultiMedia Lab

Sherston Software is launching a new program to help teachers and children to create their own multimedia presentations with speech, animation, movies, images and text, “all at the click of a mouse”. It is designed for primary schools and is said to require no expertise whatsoever.

Early years website

Learning and Teaching Scotland is launching a new website for early years workers. The site will deliver information on early years initiatives, reports and research as well as providing a discussion forum where practitioners can post messages relating to early years issues. It will also provide information about resources, staff development activities, forthcoming events and a zone for sharing good practice.

Computers to go

Viglen offers networked systems, installation, training and after-sales support. It says its wireless solutions are ideal for schools where physical cabling is problematic, and can give pupils and teachers total mobility and links to the network from anywhere on the school site. It will also demonstrate the latest version of ClassLink.
