Royal Academy, London Living Bridges until December 18. National Gallery, London Making and Meaning: Rubens’ Landscapes October 16-January 19. The first exhibition to concentrate upon this aspect of Rubens’ art, these two dozen paintings, oil sketches and all his landscape drawings cannot fail to increase the public’s admiration of this most celebrated Flemish painter. Tate Gallery, London Grand Tour: The Lure of Italy in the 18th century October 10-January 5. Summed up in Dr Johnson’s observation that, “A man who has not been in Italy is always conscious of an inferiority, from his not having seen what it is expected a man should see,” this comprehensive exhibition surveys our fascination with things Italian. Tate Gallery, Liverpool Rachel Whiteread: Shedding Life until January 5. Given media attention for her Turner Prize winning House, a concrete cast of the interior of a terraced house, this exhibition surveys all her work up to this Autumn’s Holocaust Memorial in Vienna. An associate of Picasso and Cocteau and closely related to Ben Nicholson, with whom he discovered the untutored St Ives painter, Alfred Wallis, this major exhibition focuses on the affinities Wood found between Cornouailles in Brittany and Cornwall.
