Extended hours to tackle truants

A school with one of the country's worst truancy rates is to offer its pupils 24-hour teaching.

Bridgemary community sports college, in Gosport, Hampshire, will open its classrooms from 7am to 10pm and offer lessons throughout the night via the internet.

Headteacher Cheryl Heron said teachers and administration staff would work flexi-time and that they were in favour of the two-year trial project, expected to start next September.

Mrs Heron said : "With this the pupils could structure their year so they still get their full 190 days of education".
