I AGREE that “top students are not the best teachers” but as a parent of children aged seven and eight, I am disillusioned and saddened by Mr Welford’s reason for entering the teaching profession.

Teaching is about a basic belief that all children have a fundamental right to be educated in a stimulating, well-organised and well-resourced environment. Good teaching is about the development of the whole child, emotionally, morally and intellectually.

I hope my children do not come across too many Mr Welfords and his “many colleagues” who are in the job because of “too many extra curricular commitments”.
