Extra help for mature trainees;Letter

THREE of your correspondents were frustrated by their inability to access initial teacher training (TES, May 21). All were mature applicants and two were scientists.

As you reported on May 14 the Teacher Training Agency has set up a scheme to help just such potential teachers train while they work: the graduate teacher programme. The TTA has contracted TimePlan to find up to 600 mature maths and science graduates and match them to vacancies. They will then follow a programme - normally over a school year - leading to qualified teacher status. Graduates on the pro-gramme pay no course fees and are paid at least pound;11,750 while they train.
