Graham Souter (TESS, May 20) seems to be unaware that his own trade union, the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association, has been party to the teachers’ agreement from the start and fully involved in its development.

It cannot therefore cherry-pick parts of the agreement it deems to be acceptable and parts which are not. It is a package, and it is up to all parties to the agreement, including the SSTA, to commit to making it work.

The modernisation of school structures is an exciting opportunity to ensure that our schools are fit to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Rather than a knee-jerk reaction, Mr Souter should grasp the opportunity to be part of that. Only time will tell whether Mr Souter’s time bomb will explode. I suspect it will turn out to be a damp squib.
