As the First Minister launches his crusade against sectarianism, news comes in from wildest West Lothian of a discussion between a parent and a Celtic-supporting son, who doesn’t attend a faith school.

Junior is watching the TV series on the Spartans, and questioning dad about dates. Dad hazards a guess: “Well, son, before the Romans, probably at the time of the Greeks and the Athenians.”

“Oh aye, Dad, I’ve heard of them. That’s my name at school - all the guys call me Athenian Bas***d.”
